Gate piers at a house near Bath
c. 1830
Bath stone is soft and carves beautifully, which is its virtue and its problem: outdoors it gives ground steadily to the weather. Two hundred years on a pair of gate piers has rounded these two considerably.
They are not crisp and will not be again. What they have instead is the particular blurred dignity that only real exposure produces, and which no amount of artificial ageing gets near.
