A country house terrace, Wiltshire
Early 19th century
Portland stone weathers to this chalky white and takes lichen readily, which is why it was the material of choice for garden ornament meant to look established rather than new.
The pair stood at the head of a terrace for the better part of two centuries. The chipped finial happened long before they reached us, and we have left it alone.
