A municipal park in the Midlands
c. 1885
Made for a park entrance in the years when towns competed over their public gardens, and cast with the confidence that implies — the scrollwork is heavier than it needs to be, because heavier read as more civic.
They survived the wartime iron collections, which most gates of this quality did not. A great many were taken and never used, and their absence is the reason good Victorian gates are now genuinely scarce.
