§Provenance
A terrace off the Bath Road, Gloucester
c. 1870
From a row of workers’ houses demolished after fire damage. The clay was almost certainly dug within a few miles of where they were laid — that is why they are this particular soft red rather than the harder orange of the machine-made bricks that replaced them.
They are imperial size, which matters: at 68 mm they will not course with modern metric brick. If you are patching Victorian work they are exactly right, and if you are building new they will give you something no new brick can.
