§Provenance
A townhouse frontage in Cheltenham
c. 1805
Gault clay fires to this pale straw colour without any pigment, and Georgian builders used it for the front elevation while putting cheap red stock brick down the sides where nobody of consequence would look.
These came off exactly such a frontage during a rebuild. Fewer than half the bricks on that house were gaults — the rest were reds — which is why they come up for sale so rarely in usable numbers.
