A canal-side warehouse plinth, Gloucester Docks

Staffordshire blues were fired hot enough to vitrify, which makes them almost impermeable — the reason Victorian builders used them wherever water was a problem: plinths, damp courses, canal edges, stables.
These spent a century at the waterline of a dock warehouse and are essentially unchanged. If you need brick that will not wick, this is the material the job was invented for.
