A merchant’s house in Gloucester

Georgian restraint at its most confident: no carving to speak of, the whole effect carried by proportion and a single well-cut moulding.
It came out from under nine coats of paint, the earliest of them a dark stone colour that was probably original. Stripping took a fortnight and the stone underneath was untouched.
