A chapel roof in the Forest of Dean

Welsh slate was carried the length of the country by rail and canal, and a chapel this far from Bethesda was making a statement about its own seriousness when it bought them.
Slate does not really wear out — it fails at the nail hole. These have been sorted by hand, rung for soundness, and the doubtful ones thrown out, which is the only honest way to sell reclaimed slate.
