§Provenance
A mill yard near Stroud
c. 1860
Lifted from the loading yard of a Stroud cloth mill during its conversion to flats. These were the slabs the carts ran over, and they show it — the centres are dished by perhaps eight millimetres, polished by iron-shod wheels and boot leather.
York stone of this age is close-grained and dense in a way modern quarried stone rarely matches. It has already survived a hundred and sixty winters outdoors, which tells you most of what you need to know about how it will handle yours.
