A school hall in Gloucester
c. 1900
Pitch pine was imported from the American south for buildings that had to take punishment — schools, chapels, drill halls. It is dense, full of resin, and darkens to a deep amber that no stain reproduces convincingly.
These boards took eighty years of children and still have their original surface. They have been de-nailed by hand, which is slow and the reason reclaimed boards cost what they do.
