17th century
Hewn square with an adze rather than sawn, which is why the faces are faintly dished and no two are identical. A sawn beam is flat and dead; an adzed beam catches light along its whole length.
The empty mortices and peg holes are the frame’s own record of how it went together. We leave them. Filling them would be tidying away the only part of the timber that tells you anything.
Oak of this age is exceptionally hard and dry — expect to drill pilot holes for everything, and expect it to blunt your tools.
